Whilst constructing these texts, our group had to understand existing conventions of real media products and branding an artist; then make decisions whereas to use, develop or challenge these conventions in a way which worked beneficially to our overall project.</span></div><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><u><br />
</u></b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Whilst our video is the main product, research needed to be done in to other album covers in order to understand the conventions, and decide whether to conform to them or not, especially for albums of the same genre.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><u><br />
</u></b></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Early on we decided that we wanted our album cover to be fairly dark and minimalistic; as a debut cover we believed it would be very intriguing and fits with the electronic sound of the song. Before designing our actual cover we needed to design a logo for our band name. After looking at several other drum and bass / dubstep logo's, we decided that the futuristic and thick fonts looked really effective, and it would be necessary to produce something similar as a genre signifier for our band and album cover.</span><br />

</tbody></table><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">The font also is quite futuristic and sci-fi, which is quite a common convention of drum and bass or Dubstep artists, and complements the electronic nature of the song.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Many drum and bass and electronic albums feature a very minimalistic front cover, with their logo being the focus. We really liked this approach, with their being no images of the band themselves on the front cover; it separates the genre from many others and can be very effective. You can see here some other album covers and how our video has followed some of the conventions used by them.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;"></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Our album cover uses the convention of the name of the band being the central focus of the cover. It also is a self-titled album, which is common of debut releases and even more common in the world of electronic music. A simple colour scheme and glowing lighting effects are quite common also and combined with the smoke has connotations of a live gig environment, or something otherworldly.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We also used our symbol on the front cover; it is quite subtle but noticeable through the smoke. This develops conventions as we wanted to use this symbol throughout all texts, and not many album covers of this genre use an associated band or artist symbol, most just use the name logo of the band. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOywyKa5CKbpJLxihyphenhyphen61RGPw_fgKWLfxMBz3e41junrEFdqG859OE-fW0qMFUvERk2ngYr_7VrB7vHMjkqDPg3JkOyx0kYlcWHuq2BSOHzFfFWYfwtj76M3m79Ds0UusUoxujtDePFeij9/s1600/inside.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOywyKa5CKbpJLxihyphenhyphen61RGPw_fgKWLfxMBz3e41junrEFdqG859OE-fW0qMFUvERk2ngYr_7VrB7vHMjkqDPg3JkOyx0kYlcWHuq2BSOHzFfFWYfwtj76M3m79Ds0UusUoxujtDePFeij9/s400/inside.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We also developed conventions with our inside sleeve to our cover (above). A lot of DJ's and bands within the drum and bass genre remain mostly unseen on their album covers, but we want our audience to draw a strong connection with the members of the band themselves; the members of 'The Storm' play their own instruments and it is very important that they establish themselves as a proper band. Our lead singer has the most space in the sleeve, as he would become the frontman of our band- distinguishing between faceless DJ's who simply use decks and a band who play live is very important to us and we believe this can be achieved by introducing the band to the audience across all platforms of our product.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The back of our cover is quite conventional, though it also develops the same convention as the inside sleeve; building a stronger personal relationship with the band members than a blank back cover. Our back cover keeps in with the simple black and white colour scheme, but uses silhouettes of the band members around the track listing.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We did follow the convention of a minimalistic back cover though, as we believed (for our whole album cover) that clutter would distract, and less content can work very intriguingly for an audience; we think using the darkness on the back page juxtaposed with the light outline on the silhouettes works really well to entice an audience member.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The track listing is simple, a white font, and the same as our logo. This convention was followed by the Chase and Status album on the left, but not by the Daft Punk or Pendulum albums on the right.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Some necessary conventions needed to be conformed to in order to make our product look professional: a barcode is on every album cover, as is institutional information such as the record label, copyright, date of publishing and website address. We have included all of those things, and we designed our own logo for a record label who we used with 'The Storm'. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Pulse Records, our fictional record label</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In terms of number of tracks, there is not many conventions which define a set number of tracks, based on genre, artist or anything else. The fact it is a debut album does make a difference; a band will normally not have as many tracks on a first album as they introduce themselves to the business: 'The Storm' are brand new to the drum and bass scene and we think would produce a shorter record with a more focused direction, as they need to establish a clear name for themselves early on before branching out in other directions. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is also why we chose to break the convention of having some collaboration tracks. Due to the nature of drum and bass / dubstep / electronic music, remixes are extremely common and so are featuring artists across many tracks of an album. However, as a debut album we think it is important to completely establish your own musical sound before joining creatively with others; in that respect we broke conventions by having a drum and bass album which is entirely our own.</span><br />

</div></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A common convention we followed is to have a static top portion of the web page which displays important information and branding devices, such as our main logo in the top left and a link to buy the album in the centre. To the left we see our symbol, behind a small mp3 button which automatically plays the single as you enter the website. At the bottom we have links to the bands YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and RSS feeds which remain permanently on display.</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We also followed our convention to have our logo very prominent, and always on display at the top of the page.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To have sections of the page which do not change is common as it allows for easy navigation and a constant option for the consumer to buy the product and view other important pages.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">We also followed the convention to have a navigation bar as it makes moving about the website very easy. Other websites have the same thing; and often the page names are similar- all of the above websites have a news / updates / home page, a live / tour / shows page, a video page, and 2 of the 3 have a shop.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Sticking to conventions on our website was important if we wanted to make it look professional and successful.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?</u></b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;"><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Our main product was our music video itself, but we also constructed an album cover for our artists debut album, along with a website promoting the new band.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Whilst designing our video, album cover and website, we made sure there were high levels of synergy and consistency in regards to our branding. This had to be maintained across all platforms, as is extremely important for a debut artist to build a strong identity as they are selling themselves to the industry.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">A constant colour scheme is used throughout our products; mostly black, with some cold blues and white used in contrast. Our Wix website is all black, with white text and blue highlights. Our album cover is all black, with blue smoke; a graphic which is also used on our website. We also colour graded the video using <b>Colour </b>(a piece of software on the Macintosh), to give the narrative sections a cold, blueish tint to them, and to make the performance sections seem dark and moody. </span><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">We were really pleased with the responses; people within the target audience of young men seemed to be really pleased with the end result; and yet it's appeal was not so limited that other ages and genders didn't also love it.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Particular mentions were the quick editing, the strong narrative, the strong performance, and particularly the neon light section at the end of our video. We think this section was very well recieved as it appeals our target audience of ravers and party goers; the neon paint is representative of a live show. Our video has yet to recieve a lower score than 8 / 10, which is highly encouraging; and we have had a fantastic response from everyone who has seen it. From this feedback (lots of it from within our target audience) we have learnt the importance of tailoring your product to suit the target audiences needs; we did this through creating a strong brand image.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Some negative points include that our middle section sags slightly, as we reuse the idea of my character running, being cornered, then escaping once more about three times in a row. Other critisisms include a lack of performance shots in the opening of the video, and a lack of performance in the UV light set up at the end of the video. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhDu2VgtcufOIic91d_dpuDG_UuxlyUbQMDdFync6Rv7mS-ewoqlc-wsN-EIFV41pcVenDVmbO9T8HZ2rqvEeQTVYvScrLx6GBWNCh-Fx-AG-jNfvxTgFlreu_CUwwBxdXCODpVhOaatEX/s1600/UV+light+snap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhDu2VgtcufOIic91d_dpuDG_UuxlyUbQMDdFync6Rv7mS-ewoqlc-wsN-EIFV41pcVenDVmbO9T8HZ2rqvEeQTVYvScrLx6GBWNCh-Fx-AG-jNfvxTgFlreu_CUwwBxdXCODpVhOaatEX/s320/UV+light+snap.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We also decided that we needed some audience feedback in repsonse to our intial edit, in order to then re-edit and make it as good as possible. One negative point that we recieved which i totally agree with is the rushed ending; the lack of UV performance and the very sudden twist in the narrative in between the fighting and the kiss. This was because we had to trim the original track from a hefty 4 minutes 30 down to 3 minutes. Whilst my original idea accomadated for a full length final chorus, we had to cut it in half which meant that our ending had to be quite rushed: as we did not want to reveal the UV light any earlier than the final chorus, and we also had to tie up the narrative very quickly. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">To make the ending slightly more interesting, and to wrap up the narrative successfully, we included a short flashing montage whilst my character kisses Eva which we believed was a more powerful conclusion to the whole video. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<strong>Conclusion:</strong><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Audience feedback and responses is crucial to making a successful video. We needed to understand our target audience before attempting to make a video for them. We made this quite easy for ourselves by picking a track for which we are a part of the target audience, so essentially we were making a video which we ourselves would love; i think this is why we became so invested in making our video as amazing as possible.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We have also learned that whilst accomodating to a primary target audience you can inadvertently please many other demographics; girls who have seen our video seem to like it just as much as boys- it is more the genre of music which is favoured by different genders instead of the video itself.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;">New media technologies completely enveloped our project; very little of what we managed to achieve could have been made possible without the use of new technologies and advancements in Web 2.0.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;">Before even proposing and song and video idea, we needed to gather information and inspiration from the huge array of videos now available online, through services such as YouTube and GoogleVideo.</span></span><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This proved to be useful whilst examining a target audience in relation to genre. Finally, YouTube is a medium to share our finished videos, and receive feedback.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;"><b>Facebook </b>has proved to be an invaluable tool throughout the entire project, and is a massively upcoming social medium of the past few years. For <b>research and planning </b>purposes it made arranging group meetings and contacting actors very easy. We could also stay in regular contact online for small progress updates and detailing tasks which needed to be done. Also, researching in to already existing band's Facebook pages for inspiration was made easy.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;">For <b>construction</b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;">, we have made a Facebook page for our band, which we then linked to our band website.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;"> </span></span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The new <b>Google Maps Street View </b>service allowed for easy location scouting. We would draw up a shortlist of locations for specific sections which needed shooting, then could narrow down the possibilities easily using Google Street View. This was wonderfully useful to our project: we travelled to many different locations to shoot and this saved lots of unnecessary journeys.</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Premier Pro</b></span><br />
<strong></strong><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This was the software we used to edit together our footage. It has been hugely useful to our project and has allowed to edit with complete precision.</span><br />
<br />
It also let us do some clever effects with Eva, such as the shots where she dissapears.<br />
<br />
Here is a screencap from Premier Pro:<br />
<br />
<img height="344" id="il_fi" src="http://images.macworld.com/images/news/graphics/150431-premproscreen_original.jpg" style="padding-bottom: 8px; padding-right: 8px; padding-top: 8px;" width="586" /><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We used Premier Pro to edit our track. The brief stated that our video must be 3 minutes or less, and our track selection was 4 minutes 30 seconds; even though Premier Pro is primarily for editing video, it worked brilliantly for cutting down and marginally speeding up our track, so it was under 3 minutes long.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We also used Premier Pro to create a promo montage-style video for the screening of all our music videos.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/L7FblBLLeio" width="560"></iframe><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Photoshop</b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><br />
</b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Photoshop was used heavily throughout the construction of our video, website and album cover. The album cover template itself was presented to us in a photoshop (.psd) format, making it the essential software to use for stills editing and graphics.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We created our main band logo on Photoshop:</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCXGDPta-14SuAdmM7Z9Pz7Zkpb72IJm1u7-fxBZkxNtNTj8cITXQLHKkBdKtUg_zEI5u1FR5VRywAVbd91qi7yP2OcLrj_cDblzWtv5iv5FyM-5gOsCAs8dt1kibbF-fTvCl90kYo96sa/s1600/The+Storm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="85" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCXGDPta-14SuAdmM7Z9Pz7Zkpb72IJm1u7-fxBZkxNtNTj8cITXQLHKkBdKtUg_zEI5u1FR5VRywAVbd91qi7yP2OcLrj_cDblzWtv5iv5FyM-5gOsCAs8dt1kibbF-fTvCl90kYo96sa/s320/The+Storm.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After making this logo the blue and black colour scheme became consistent to our branding; as did the font of our name. <span style="font-family: Verdana;">Colour was the software on the Mac which we used to colour grade our video. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here is a short video, narrated by Eoin, which explains some of it's uses and applications with regards to our footage.</span><br />
<br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><u>WEB 2.0</u></span></b><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>WIX.COM</b></span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Wix.com was the website we used to make our website. It is a flash based online website designer. We were the first year in our school to get to use this software, and it proved to be a fantastic way to integrate our website in with the rest of our project.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You can embed videos, pictures, hyperlinks and sound files in to your website through Wix, and it allows for high levels of visual customisation, with many buttons, effects and features available.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiYmJ_i7PknTgkrgD1MKRVYZ7FsOAPT29IHFgI0UsorilY2LX-KdI8G3bv-me3XWOizNzJMuRnJkB56fQ2-WSYfkVHrVrAhoLeNcIjKxEWUJRlBf93FPHLi9jIyrblbP4y0CLq7IfxGk7i/s1600/Screen+Shot+2011-12-12+at+19.05.21.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="183" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiYmJ_i7PknTgkrgD1MKRVYZ7FsOAPT29IHFgI0UsorilY2LX-KdI8G3bv-me3XWOizNzJMuRnJkB56fQ2-WSYfkVHrVrAhoLeNcIjKxEWUJRlBf93FPHLi9jIyrblbP4y0CLq7IfxGk7i/s320/Screen+Shot+2011-12-12+at+19.05.21.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Wix's Interface is clean and well designed</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It allowed us to embed our music video on the 'Video' page of our website, as well as have our track selection playing when the user first arrives on the website.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The level of customisation available also allowed us to keep our branding consistent throughout all our texts. Starting with the original black and blue scheme on our album cover, we could use this throughout the website and also include smokey graphics and our band logo.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Our websites main page, which keeps in theme with our branding</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It also allows for high levels of audience interaction: pages can be commented on, you can enter a competition and sign up to our bands mailing list. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Simply having the ability to make a website at all (using Wix or not) greatly increases audience interaction with the band. As well as those ways already stated, users can view a whole array of photos from our band photo shoot, learn about and purchase tickets for upcoming gigs and view individual member bio's.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We also made a <b>Twitter </b>page for our band, which we then linked to our website.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><u>Evaluation</u></b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b><u><br />
</u></b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have already discussed how we used <b>Web 2.0 </b>in our evaluation; <b>YouTube </b>and <b>Facebook</b> for posting our video and receiving feedback; and the YouTube video statistics will prove interesting later on after some views have (hopefully) amassed, we will be able to see if our video is watched by the demographic for which it was intended.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">Using Facebook, we also made an event for our screening, which helped to promote it.</span><br />
<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">We have used Blogger across all areas of the project; it is how we present all of our work and research findings to our teachers and examinator and the overall framework of our project.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 18px;"><br />

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; line-height: 18px;">In <b>research and planning, </b>we posted any initial ideas, video inspiration, any other sources of inspiration, deconstructions of bands websites, sketches, location ideas, or simply diary progress notes on blogger. It is a fantastic medium for which to amass a large quantity of visually exciting research and necessary planning. I can't imagine how this would have been possible with a pen and paper! Using Blogger meant we could constantly update the blog from multiple different locations, and continue to improve upon and tweak previous work with ease. Links to our teachers blogs also made finding extra resources and tips very easy.</span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We looked at previous year groups answers, and we noticed that for Question 1 most groups had filmed themselves sitting around their edit suites and discussing the things which are being shown on screen. This is good, and informative, but we thought it was very static and not visually stimulating, as you are not getting to see the things which the group are discussing.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We thought a better way to answer the question would be a sort of directors commentary, edited together on Premier Pro, where we could show certain clips of our video as we talk about them. We can also download other real media texts from the internet and cut them in to the video for referencing. We believe this way is much better visually, as you don't really need to see us sitting around holding scripts. This way is much more engaging and hopefully will work well. We are going to script it all together and split the commentary fairly evenly, then each use the video on our blogs. Then we will individually comment on the website and album cover.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For question 2 we are going to answer it more traditionally with text and pictures. There is lots to say though about how we used synergy and we can show lots of stuff from our website.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For question 3 we are going to interview a bunch of people about the video and edit it together. We will all use this video, then individually we will write responses to the feedback.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For question 4 it will be mostly simple, with text and lots of pictures. However we are going to make a couple of short demo's using software that we have been using, using a screencap program to demonstrate colour grading in Colour, and editing in Premier Pro.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-1674528437320976162011-11-27T08:58:00.000-08:002011-12-15T09:17:27.877-08:00Video sign off!<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Today we heard those fabled words from Mrs B: 'you are signed off!'. For our video, that is.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Editing has been a great process, we decided early on that the editing would be split more or less evenly between the three of us: one would edit, another would work on the album cover and the other on the website. We decided that having three at once on the edit suite would become a bit crowded, and this let us each project our own creative influence on to the video. We would then reconverge, discuss changes and give each other feedback. This way also meant all areas of our project could move forward simultaneously.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">For the big sections of the video, like the chorus drops, we did work together, as we believed that we needed to come to a communal decision.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span> <br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">I am so proud to be a part of this group; we are all thrilled with our final product and so pleased to get it signed off quite early, now we can focus our efforts on to making our website and album cover look just as good.</span></span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-78822485351455690392011-11-17T08:49:00.000-08:002011-12-15T08:56:26.958-08:00Final shoot reflections<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Last night was our final shoot- the UV section of our performance.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As we knew this is going to be the best bit of our video we totally went for it. We had Olivia Murphy, an art student at Latymer, who came and covered us in the paint. We are so grateful for her help and we think the finished stuff looks really awesome.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We put our band symbol on Eoin's chest, and covered our bodies in runes, in keeping with the backdrop of our set. George in particular looked great, Olivia used a tree like design which (on camera) makes George look like some kind of otherworldly drumming monster. We are thrilled with how the shoot went; we just hope the footage looks as good on camera as it did to us whilst performing.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's actually quite sad now to be pulling down our set; it's been really great being able to perform in my basement and the shoots have got better every single time.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-29789110845809739142011-11-11T08:41:00.000-08:002011-12-15T13:48:26.006-08:00Final 2 narrative shoot reflections<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We spent the last two days shooting the final sections of our narrative.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Wednesday was a day of inspiration; we simply grabbed a camera, got in to costume and wondered around Edmonton looking for locations which would make for cool shots. The area around school is quite grungy looking; a large estate provided some great locations for us to use. Once again, we used our tried and true method of blocking it out, then shooting every possible angle repeatedly until we were totally satisfied! I'm really getting in to this role now; high levels of emotion are constantly required and being very scared at a creepy looking Eva is now becoming part of my daily routine!</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We know that some of the footage we shot will most likely be completely unusable, but that's okay because we believe you sometimes have to shoot something wrong in order to reshoot it perfectly.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Thursday was a much more structured shoot; we had a full storyboard as this was the climactic fight scene in our video and so needed to be safely choreographed. It went really well; the location was near my house and looked great. We were particularly ruthless with our shooting yesterday; this fight scene has to look as good as it possibly can be, and as none of us had any experience shooting a physical fight it proved to be quite a challenge.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Eva actually did punch me during one take- i'm sure this will make it on to our outtake reel.</span></span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-24396503394117532752011-11-07T08:35:00.000-08:002011-12-15T13:48:02.701-08:002nd and 3rd Performance shoots<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This weekend we did two evenings of shooting our performance in a row! It was extremely tiring but we are really happy with the results.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After reviewing footage from our first performance shoot we realised we needed some guidance with our lighting (see the group blog for more details about over exposure problems), so we got the technician, Chris, to come and help us.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Upon arriving to help us with lighting, we discovered 2 of the 3 lights we had were inexplicably broken! So we've gone from 3-point lighting to 1-point lighting overnight. No problem however, i spoke to Mrs. Blackborow and another light has been delivered to my house; the lighting now looks fantastic: much moodier and more in theme with our branding.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Also, from a performance side of things, i think we really pulled out all the stops this time. The original footage was quite static; we probably weren't going for it as much as we needed to. But this time, especially whilst messing around with the smoke machine and strobe lighting, we went completely mad! We also got a great performance from our drummer, George, who was quite conservative originally but went full on last night.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I am so excited to get editing with this footage: both our narrative and performance sections are coming together nicely. We didn't get to shoot the UV light stuff, but this is better as now we have a whole evening to work on this. Also, painting ourselves and only shooting some of what we needed would be pointless as achieving continuty with the symbols we are going to cover ourselves with would be really hard.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We're on our way!</span></span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-19131134256703049482011-11-03T08:20:00.000-07:002011-12-15T08:56:26.959-08:00First performance shoot reflections<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Last night we had our first performance shoot. It went quite well in the end; extremely tiring!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We had decided that there was absolutely no point in storyboarding our performance, so instead we wrote up a list of every angle we needed; simply having them in text form is enough- drawing them too would have been unnecessary.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We didn't think we would shoot anywhere near everything (and we didn't), but we just worked our way down the list one by one.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">For our master shots we had two cameras filming at once, one steady and one freehand. This is good as we will be able to use some match on action between shots.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Lighting proved to be an issue; we wanted a dark and moody feel to our set up, but balancing this out with 3 point lighting was tricky in such an enclosed environment. Especially as we are dressed in black, too dark meant we blended in to the background, but too light meant our set and faces looked horribly over exposed.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We will need to review our footage to see how the lighting looks; hopefully there will be some stuff we can use but we were treating tonight as a semi-test shoot; all of us are expecting 2 or 3 re-shoots to get the best footage possible.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-53392356801504945572011-11-01T09:21:00.000-07:002011-12-15T13:47:37.172-08:00Relocation<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We have decided, as a group, that it will be best to fully focus our efforts on making our group blog look it's best.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As such, my individual blog may be somewhat lacking in posts for the next few weeks. We decided that for every bit of paperwork and inspiration we may find, instead of posting it on our individual blogs (and then the other members having to replicate that), it would be better to post most stuff on the group blog and to share our work evenly between us. We are all really good friends and have no problem in splitting the work load between us; not one of us has done any more than the others so claiming work individually seems unnecessary and overly time consuming when we could maintain a constant, strong group portfolio on our group blog.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Find the link to our group blog on the right hand side with my other links.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I will post some reflections on shoots and other personal notes on here, and the posts will pick up again around the time of our evaluation in mid-December.</span></span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-39945214697274900162011-10-31T07:35:00.000-07:002011-12-15T08:56:26.960-08:00Walthamstow Shoot 2 Reflections<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yesterday we shot potentially the trickiest section of our narrative. It was the chase scene between me and Eva; starting fairly early and sprinting for hours upon hours has totally destroyed my leg muscles!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The shoot went really well. We had storyboarded certain key shots which we needed, but let our inspiration take us the rest of the way; within our group we are discovering that ruthlessly shooting everything is working out really well for us. Instead of planning every shot and shooting it once or twice; we block the scene and then shoot every possible angle about fifteen times! Our philosophy is even if the shot seems perfect: shoot it again!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">We believe later on, during the editing process, we will be very happy with the huge amount of footage we have amassed. No matter how well you shoot problems can always arise later on; shooting everything loads and loads of times will hopefully stop this problem occuring.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-92161613520277084872011-10-30T07:23:00.000-07:002011-12-15T08:56:26.960-08:00Walthamstow Shoot 1 Reflections<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Today we went to Walthamstow to do some initial shooting and to continue location scouting. We needed to find a good looking and appropriate alleyway for the chase scene which we will be shooting tomorrow; and we found it!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">It's near Eva's house which is good as we can have a break in between shooting sections easily.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The shooting was okay; we hadn't actually planned exactly what we were going to shoot and where- we knew roughly what shots and what section we were filming but were not as prepared as our Broomfield park shoot. As such we didn't actually get that much footage- but what we did get looks great. Improvisation with shooting is not necessarily a bad thing, but maybe a bit more structure to todays shooting could have been helpful.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The eyes look great in Eva though!</span><br />

<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SBjQ9tuuTJQ" width="680"></iframe><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I love this music video, and it is heavily performance based. In preparation for performing in our video i have been watching Dave Grohl perform; he is highly energetic and frantic, fully taking control of the space and remaining dynamic throughout.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Whilst not exactly the same genre as our song choice, both songs are loud and both require an energy filled performance.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A lot of the camera work is fairly static but the video remains awesome due to the bands commitment to the role. Also impressive is how much room each band member has, yet they still manage to completely command the space. Lots of head banging (long hair is great for frantic videos!), keeping the instrument moving, never keeping the feet planted and multiple facial expressions make this performance extremely successful, and hopefully we can reproduce something similar in our video.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-60620752999022229252011-10-27T07:11:00.000-07:002011-12-15T08:56:26.960-08:00First shoot reflections<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Today we shot the opening narrative sequence of our video in Broomfield park. It was <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">more</span> demanding than i had initially expected!</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The shots we took were fairly static, which meant we had a lot of fun messing around with framing and trying to capture every angle of the scene.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I had to cry a lot, scream, laugh, drink, smoke, shout: trying to believably convey madness is quite tricky, but after looking at the footage i am quite happy with some of our footage.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We were lucky with weather conditions; it did rain but only slightly- rain could seriously impact continuity, and also would mean we would have needed to be extra cautious with the camera. Luckily it was just a grey day, which suits the mood of our narrative sequence anyway.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As well as shooting, we spent a couple of hours at my house (2 minutes walk away) storyboarding, planning further shoots and set dressing my basement for performance sections.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was helpful and pointed out several parts of our treatment which hadn't been initially thought through. I am also glad that now i get to perform in our band!</span><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">However the response to our idea seemed really positive, it is a song which i love and i think our idea (whilst pretty ambitious) could end up being something fantastic.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-80569201051996606892011-10-10T12:54:00.000-07:002011-12-15T13:31:29.235-08:00Another initial idea<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/y2KC1P9s6-Q" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" width="680"></iframe><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This idea is for the song Propane Nightmares by Pendulum.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The concept is a blend between narrative and performance.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It begins as a narrative only; a young man awakes in a house. It is instantly unfamiliar to him and he panics as he realises his hands are tied. He has a picture of a girl with him; it is torn in half on the floor in front of him. For the intro of the song we would see him struggling; as it picks up pace he should escape his bonds and break go to the door.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This scene would be intercut with shots of someone dragging an axe up some stairs, we only see their feet.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As the chorus drops, the boy is about to leave the room and the axe comes smashing through the door, and a masked face appears in the hole. The band begins to appear inside the house, playing, but the characters do not react or notice the band in any way. He continues attempting to escape and is cornered etc. As the second chorus drops he should get to the front door after subduing the maniac. However he looks at the photo and cannot leave, so turns around and goes back inside.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As the song slows down for the middle 8 section, the guy should crash in to a bathroom and seal the door, he see's the girl from the photo gagged and tied up on the floor. He bends down, free's her, and they hug and cry together. The man is waking up outside. He whispers to her, and takes her hand.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As the song speeds up they leave the room and get to the door, and for the final drop they should go charging out the door, only for the man to get grabbed from behind. He gestures for the girl to run and she does, looking back in horror. The man struggles, kicks, on the floor and is scrambling to escape. The maniac however drags him back inside and the song ends with a cut to black as the door slams, with the girl looking on.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-28166401365728974942011-10-07T02:50:00.000-07:002011-12-15T13:34:35.207-08:00Feminine Representation in some Music Videos<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We had a look at how females can be represented in music videos; and decided to focus on two different representations- females as only sex objects to be gawped at and the opposite; females shown in an empowering way.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We looked at three videos; two for empowerement and one for objectification.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KdS6HFQ_LUc" width="680"></iframe></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhysE0lfPOSgeVTG354HQZDnKQ69wq3k5shKru1UnpxYZwJ4UTwS3Mmi03qT5xFHFPO-iTmaLVJiaOneXBqEG9yEFKskovkx2pS9D0GqHmCF5yHsWCiQPjmw04hgBaX5wZp7tBLd8LeMw0k/s1600/rihanna.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="216" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhysE0lfPOSgeVTG354HQZDnKQ69wq3k5shKru1UnpxYZwJ4UTwS3Mmi03qT5xFHFPO-iTmaLVJiaOneXBqEG9yEFKskovkx2pS9D0GqHmCF5yHsWCiQPjmw04hgBaX5wZp7tBLd8LeMw0k/s320/rihanna.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Rihanna represented as empowered</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This video, S & M by Rihanna, is empowering to females, although it is not immediately apparent. She takes the dominant role, displaying an ‘I’m hot and I know it’ attitude, and despite the sexual nature of the video, does not objectify her. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The scene of her being interviewed by the press is representative of critics reactions to her over suggestive sexual nature; this video is her response- she disregards the suggested ‘reasons’ for her attitude (‘daddy issues’), and puts it down to simple enjoyment of sex and liking being in a position of power. She is saying she enjoys her body and her looks, and is happy to show it off. This video; while easily misinterpreted as simply selling sex, is actually very empowering to females.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5T0utQ-XWGY" width="680"></iframe></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Fergalicious - Fergie</b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This video can be interpreted in conflicting ways. One way is that she is conforming to the gender stereotype of women being nothing more than sex objects. She lies around in skimpy outfits looking hot, and the video is not much more than that. This could be seen as demeaning to women; suggesting their looks are their most valued trait; or could be seen as empowering to women; in that Fergie enjoys her looks and enjoys the attention she gets from all these guys.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I think it is the latter; the boys in the video are shown with a lower status than her; they chase after her and 'come and go like seasons', only for her to dismiss them all, while enjoying the attention she recieves. I'm sure some women would say that she is only shown as being desirable because of her looks (the boys in the video don't want her because of her personality, i'm sure), but i think it is empowering to females as it puts her in a position of power over men.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div align="center"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/el3W9oB2bE8" width="680"></iframe></span></div><div align="center"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Pitbull - I know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table></div><div align="left"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is 'I Know You Want Me' by Pitbull. This video is the total opposite kind of representation of women; it objectifies them totally as nothing more than sexual objects to be looked at. This video is nothing more than Pitbull rapping with lots of attractive women dancing around him and running their hands over him while he describes how much they want him. The women in this video have no personality or visible positive traits except for their looks; the lyrics of the song further this objectification. Most of them are wearing bikini's or skimpy outfits, and are dancing in a suggestive way.</span></div><div align="left"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div align="left"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In my opinion, this video is the epitome of everything which is wrong with the music industry these days. The song is just awful, and the video is highly degrading to females. In Rihanna's video she sings about her own empowerement and strong personality; here Pitbull sings about how many women he gets, seemingly only interested in them for sex. The thing which makes this video slightly worse than other objectifying videos is the large number of different women involved. At least in other videos rappers will sing about a woman and it will be just that one woman in the video; some sense of true feelings are portrayed; in this video it is irrelevant who the women are or what they are like or how they feel- they are simply sex objects to be exploited by Pitbull and to be enjoyed by the viewer.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">While our video will be absolutely nothing like any of these videos i have discussed (it will be a totally different genre), i still think it is important to acknowledge how objectifying females has become too common within the music industry and stereotypical portrayals are something which need to be avoided. </span></div>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-9298419157315966392011-10-04T02:19:00.000-07:002011-12-15T13:39:58.077-08:00Potential Ideas<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ogMNV33AhCY" width="680"></iframe></span><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Witchcraft - Pendulum</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The whole video would be intercut with the performance of a band.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The video opens with a boy moving about on a road, looking disorientated. He is clutching a scrunched up piece of paper; it clearly holds some importance to him. At 0:45, as the song gets louder, we begin the dual narrative which makes up most of the video. The boy begins to move with more purpose in 'the present', and we see the boy and a girl (his girlfriend) in a somewhat abusive relationship in the past. Colour grading clearly distinguishes between the two times; and the suggestion at this point is that the boy has lost the girlfriend in the present. In the past they fight over some lipstick on the guys collar. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He stumbles into a shop at 1:00, and reemerges with a large bottle of spirit. This is intercut with the boy moving towards his girlfriend in the middle of the road; she is facing away from him with her head down and looks beaten and dirty. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">From 1:05 to 1:07, he puts his hand on her shoulder and turns her round; we cut away just before her face is visible. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Just as the drop hits (1:07), he begins to down the spirit / we see him hit her in the past / he begins to jump around like a maniac around the road.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As the verse begins at 1:29, the pace slows down; we see the girl outside smoking a cigarette and the guy goes out to console her. They slightly make up for the fight. The boy in the present sits down in an alleyway somewhere and looks at the piece of paper. He cries into his hands.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At the change at 1:51, we see the boy smoke some drugs, maybe sniff a line of something off of a credit card. He stumbles about in a daze, revelling in his self destruction. In the past we see the relationship intensify again.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At 2:13 when the second chorus drops; the relationship kicks off again, we see a visibly abusive fight with lots of shouting and screaming; the girl tries to leave but he holds her back. Once again this is intercut with him charging about the streets, jumping around wildly, off of buildings- we also begin to see the girlfriend standing with her head down, hair covering face, in the distance. He doesn't notice he is being watched.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At 2:58 we focus on the past relationship for a moment, and we see her throw the girl to the ground. She hits her head on a table and he feels blood coming from her head; he has accidentally killed her. He looks down at her body with utter disbelief and disgust at himself. In the build up to the last drop at 3:22, we return to the shot from 1:05 to 1:07; he approaches the girl and puts his hand on her shoulder to turn her round.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As it drops, we see the girl has some crazy eyes and is covered in blood; she is dead and is haunting him. For the final part of the song the cutting gets even quicker; she chases him down the road and he runs for his life. She looks insane and is all mangled up; he is totally terrified.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At 3:44, when the chorus repeats itself we intercut the chase scene with other moments from the video in a very quick montage. We see him downing the spirit, sniffing the line, dancing about; we also see the relationship- the moment she died and the general fighting. The video ends with her cornering him in a dead end of a road; he clutches the piece of paper to his chest. They face each other; then she charges at him.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We cut to a shot of the paper, revealed to be a photo of him and her together, now splattered with blood, falling to the floor. It ends with his hand crashing down into shot as well; then cut to black.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-34612587221967167262011-10-03T04:56:00.000-07:002011-12-15T13:39:44.785-08:00Michel Gondry - A Director Case Study<strong><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Michel Gondry</span></strong><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Michel Gondry has directed many music videos and now feature films, as well as short movies and commercials. Recent work includes Be Kind, Rewind (2008) and The Green Hornet (2011).</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He has won hundreds of awards for his work; he sets the benchmark for creativity in terms of music video direction, and is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the commerical director with the most awards. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To name a few music videos out of his huge (and i mean <em>seriously</em> huge) filmography:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Around The World - Daft Punk</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/s9MszVE7aR4" width="680"></iframe></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mia Doi Todd - Open Your Heart</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/M8QgeESiPZA" width="680"></iframe></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Everlong - Foo Fighters</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Gimme Shelter- The Rolling Stones</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mad World - Gary Jules</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hyper Ballad - Bjork</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Michael Gondry is particularly known for his surreal music videos and interesting choices of visual style in his videos. The two i have chosen are two which show off some of the techniques he uses in his videos; using human actors as a visual representation of the music as apposed to characters in a story.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The video for 'Around the World' perfectly encompasses Michael Gondry's surreal style; the different groups of actors in different costumes represent a different layer of the song. The guys with the prosthetic heads on are the bass line, the skeletons are the guitar riff, and the robots are the vocals. All the cast are dancing on a large record, while a trippy light show plays in the background. The different levels on the record represent the pitch of the notes as well. </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A still from 'Around the World'</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The video for Open Your Heart also uses many of the surreal elements which have made Michel Gondry so recognised as a music video director. All the cast are wearing brightly coloured shirts with a different colour on each side. Most of the shots involve large crowds and synchronised movement sequences assorted by their different colours; making for a visually fantastic video, the clever choreography and use of colour being particular highlights.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />

</tbody></table><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This video is similar to 'Around the World' in that it uses a group of actors to represent an overall motif or theme; they become a living breathing entity as one, not seperate individuals. It is surreal as it places all these brightly coloured actors into a normal city as opposed to the fictional environment in 'Around the World'.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Michel Gondry is a successful and acclaimed director and i have learnt how surrealism can be used to great effect in a video; whether very obviously surreal like in 'Around the World' or slightly more realistic as in 'Open your Heart'; both these videos are a visual treat and very unique.</span>Latymer Media 2010http://www.blogger.com/profile/12158812812118861790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623402208118909858.post-26651106369256671462011-09-29T07:41:00.000-07:002011-12-15T13:39:07.277-08:00Intertextual References in a music video<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Sb5aq5HcS1A" width="680"></iframe></span></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />

</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The references and direct imitations of other famous artists and era's of music show some of the influences on the RHCP to date, they are not just the most famous artists of the past. For example, the Spice Girls were crazy popular but are completely different to the RHCP, so there was no need to imitate them. The video raises the band up; commenting on their success and suggesting that they are the defining band of this era; the video ends with them returning to their normal clothes and performance style. </span><br />
