Task 4: The Evaluation

1) Did you enjoy the workshop day? What were the best bits and why?

Yes! The workshop day was really great fun. Working with a proper crew (of nice people) was a great experience, and everyone had loads of fun. I think in terms of having a laugh, this sort of music video is perfect for us- big crowds of dancing people, strong performances from the band, and general mayhem made for a great day.

2) What did you learn from participating in the workshop?

I learnt that hours of preparation is totally and utterly necessary if you want to get anything done at all. I learnt the importance of leaving several hours of extra time (you will need it!), and that it's best to shoot as much as possible- more footage gives you much more flexibility with the editing process afterwards.

I learnt how much time you need to spend working on the set ups of each shot; perfecting the frame and considering every element within it (lighting, composition etc.) will make for successful footage afterwards.

3) Are you pleased with the footage and your edit? Is it how you expected it to look?

Oh yeah. Yeah man. The footage looks great; for an amatuer recreation of a video, shot entirely in one day, the footage is eerily close to the original video. And with the sheer amount of footage we shot it was easy to find appropriate matching clips to use.

I really was surprised with how good the footage looks; it looks totally professional, the lighting and performances being particular stand outs

4) How do you think your workshop experiences will impact on your approach to next terms music video coursework?

More than anything, i think this experience has helped me understand the amount of time you need to spend to make a professional and slick looking finished product. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE PLANNING!! Without a well experienced crew and cast, and a solid time specific shot list with all locations and props accounted for, the video itself will surely fall flat. Admittedly, organization was even more important for this workshop; as we had a large cast, and a paid professional crew; but the principles need to be maintained if we want our video to look professional.

I believe the practise in lip-synching will prove to be invaluable also, presuming i will be performing in our music video. It is not enough to simply mouth the words and dance around; so much of the performance comes from the facial expressions of the performers- and you need to actually sing the words to make it look real. Miming is painfully obvious!

Finally, i believe i'm gonna be super ambitious next year with our project. After three years of Latymer media experience, i want our final project to be as special and memorable as possible. And with our new awesome knowledge of music video construction and performance i know it will be.
